Dr Katherine Bloomfield receives the APM ‘Project Management 'PhD/Doctoral of the Year Award’

Association for Project Management (APM) showcased some of the best and brightest talent among career starters, educators and academics at the inaugural Festival of Education and Research Awards 2020.

The virtual event, which took place on 21 October, saw awards presented in eight categories that celebrated the contribution of research and education to the project profession.

Our Project X Research Fellow, Dr Katherine Bloomfield won the prestigious Herbert Walton Award for her prior PhD research at the University of Hull. It was sponsored by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, and supervised by Professor Terry Williams, Professor Chris Bovis and Professor Yasmin Merali.

Katherine’s doctoral thesis – entitled Systemic Risk in Public Sector Outsourcing Contracts – draws on a sample of public projects commissioned by the UK’s Ministry of Defence and found that that public sector project managers would benefit from the development of more sophisticated practices that are capable of dealing with the systemic properties of risk.

“The award came as a pleasant surprise. The competition was tough, so I’m ecstatic. It feels like the cherry on top after three years of hard work.” – Dr Katherine Bloomfield
